Stuff That Sucks

Pop-Up and Pop-Under Windows

Since hardly anyone ever clicks on banner ads, some idiot had the bright idea to make the ads pop up in new browser windows so that you cannot ignore them so easily. By habit, I close pop up windows before they ever have a chance to load. Hardly anyone ever clicks on these things. Please please PLEASE do not put these on your site. All they do is annoy people.

Under Construction Junk

One of the worst things you can do is put an incomplete site online. Don't plan on creating a ten page site and then go live with only 3 or 4 pages complete! If your site is not ready, then don't rush it. Get everything finished or at least have some kind of content for each button on your menu, otherwise people will never come back to your site.

Backgrounds That Are Too Colorful

On every good web developer's list of bad web development examples is the use of colorful backgrounds for web pages. They almost always make the text harder to read and don't add much value to the page. There is nothing wrong with solid colors for backgrounds! Not using background images also makes one less thing that has to be downloaded in order to view the page.

Making The User Hunt For Contact Information

Occasionally you may find a site where you would want to email the webmaster or someone else in the company. Nothing is more frustrating than having to hunt for contact information, especially an email address. In most cases, the lack of any kind of contact info is a sign that the owners of the website are shady, especially for e-commerce sites.

Disabling Right-Click

Some slick javascript person has come up with some code that disables the ability to right-click anywhere within a web page. This is done with the intention of keeping people from stealing graphics or viewing code, but is really worthless. Let me tell you, every time I find a page with this, I ALWAYS find a way to view the source of the page. Anything you put on the web can be taken - so if there is something that means that much to you, it probably shouldn't be online.
