Backgrounds

One of the most visible signs of an amateur web designer is the use of too-colorful backgrounds in their pages. I have run across several websites dedicated to providing free clipart for web pages, and it is rare that I can find any suitable background images in any of these online collections.

The problem with most background images is that they make the text hard to read. Those psychedelic patterns may look cool when it's just a blank page, but when you put any kind of writing in front of it, you are likely to get a headache trying to read it. A background should be just that - a background. It should not be distracting in any way, because you want people to read the content of your site, not look at the pretty swirling colors in the background.

Your best bet for a background is to use a solid color. In fact, most sites have one of two different colors in their background - black or white. White is, of course, the easiest color to use because it is the standard and easy on the eyes. Also, white is good because most clipart comes on a white background, which means you won't have to do any image editing when you want to use clipart or other graphics.
